For an excellent (and non-silly) pre-19th century battle scene I'd
recommend Depardieu's "Cyrano de Bergerac". Overall, an excellent
demonstration of how a film can be sentimental without being
 awful.

What a marvelous film, Why not add "The Last Valley with Omar Sharif to
this
list. The filmic version of the hell of the Thirty Years War is a worthy
film
by about any criteria.
