DS2:Basing VTOLS

I am basing my Aerospace pieces using the plastic Games Workshop bases
but
using a metal stem rather than the weak plastic one.  How have people
based
their VTOLS which are supposed to be lower.  I thought of using the same
bases but now think I might have to use a shorter pic on some plastic
sheeting.  Thanks
