In my origional D&D campaign, the Orcs where actually a force of reason
and
enlightenment in the universes, who began to create debased geneticlly
modified versions as "grunts" in a civil war. Unofrtunately, the Orc
grunts
where extreamly suited most enviroments (tough, resilient, quick
breading,
ruthless and relentless) and soon the "Imperial" and "Republican" Orcs
found that they had let armageddon out of the bottle, quickly joined
forces
against their old servents and where almost oblitterated from the
universes.

In my D&D universe, this explained why the orcs where common throughout
the
universes, and what role they played in it (unfetted war machines
looking
for a war. It was what they where geneticly created for). It also took
the
p*ss out of the other elder race cliche's "you mean that the Orcs are
the
ancients?!?!?!!!!"
