GZG DS2: Genres for DS2.

Subject: GZG DS2: Genres for DS2.

Genres
------
Genres are a set of limitations and enhancements designed to better
simulate
DS2 gaming in a certain era, whether historical, modern or fictional.

Genre Extensions or House rules
-------------------------------
You need these to extend the core rules to your chosen genre. For
example,
"Blaster BL1-BL5 available in Star Wars." What's a Blaster BL/1? Its a
weapon system between a HEL and DFFG that better simulates the blaster
bolts
visible in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back!

Genre Limitations or Arbitary limits
------------------------------------
Or, as Mikko puts it, "Arbitrarily disallowing something for no good
logical
reason." You need these to forbid things which would violate the genre.
For example: "Disallow GMS in Star Wars genre". Sounds arbitrary.
But
all the movies and books have no guided missile systems in them. On
researching the genre and reading more about the background and how it
was
developed, you soon come to realise that Star Wars is based on WWII,
where
there were no GMS.
One can justify this limitation in practical terms by saying that
interstellar supply lines aren't of high enough capacity to justify the
expense of transporting non-energy munitions with their high weight and
one
shot nature. And, no manufacturer makes things as primitive as
non-energy
weapons.

Genres Not Available
--------------------
There are many genres that DS2 would be unsuited to. For example,
colonial,
napoleonic, medieval, ancients, Stingray (the Gerry Anderson puppet
show),
skirmish, man to man, fantasy and space battles.

Genres Available
----------------
There are several genres available that DS2 can be adapted to. For
example,
WWI, WWII, modern, ultra-modern, near future, GZG Future History,
Hammer's
Slammers, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back!, Gothic SF (aka GW WH40K
and
Epic), Starship Troopers (the Book), Starship Troopers (the Movie),
Aliens
(Colonial Marines) and Steve Jackson Games Ogre.
    Any more suggestions?
