They surely just come under the normal tank design rules. Neither the 
M10 nor the M36 carried a particularly large gun for their size, were 
especially fast (although the M18 was) or had a particularly low 
profile. They were, essentially, poorly armoured, open-topped tanks 
and can be designed as such.
