How come Earth is still around?

Just curious, given that all these powers are at eachothers throats with
the most devestating and sophisticated weapons imaginable, how is it
that Earth hasn't been destroyed in the same fighting that's gripping
the stars? Is that teh function that teh UN is fulfilling?
