  If you don't know where in its orbit the planet will be it might be
sensible to come in this way - so you are never further from the
planet than its orbital radius (well, in the x direction anyway).  On
the other hand, if you want to stop when you get there and you don't
have unlimited fuel, the ecliptic plane is the place to be.
