I seem to recall that in book version of "The Warrior" the Slammers face
another mercenary force who has hover armor (but in this case SPGs, not
tanks).  This other force also used hover APCs, rather than skimmers.

Of course, these other guys all die horribly, but there must be a
scenario
in there somewhere.
