Just to poke my head in on this particular discussion, what about
python or goovy, for example?  We had a lot of luck with the Jython
implementation of python in Java at my last job, and Groovy looked
pretty impressive to me when I was evaluating it after spending a week
with some vendors demoing a product that used Groovy as an embedded
scripting language.
