AAR: Destroy the Great Satan

Just finished playing this as the IF and will also finish this up
shortly as the NSL. In both the IF comes nowhere near crippling, much
less destroying the NSL ships. The biggest problem I see is SM's (8 of
16 ships) are useless in this fight. Takes nearly 4 SM's to pepper the
entire possible movement bubble and if your lucky, the one SM that
locks on might actually hit with a single missle after PD and class 1
beams. The issue (besides movement plot) is to use them effective you
have to end your movement near the NSL ships, SURVIVE THEIR FIRE, then
guess right on the NSL movement. Rather difficult. The 4 beam boats
are decent but difficult to use effectively with only a F arc.
Submunition boats are workable but only get 4.
Battle 1:
I suicide dive the 4 submunition boats firing all 16 SM's. Most of
them die (not that it really matters as they are only one shot boats)
and slighly damage the two NSL ships. I then spent a couple turns
maneuvoring the rest of the ships in the A arc (to keep out of beam
arcs) to for 12 ship combat pass. Never happens as the NSL ships
maneuvor to cover each others blindspots and they pick off my beam
boats one at a time. Attempt to get the SM boats in close to launch
but killed.
Battle 2:
I move the NSL ships directly forward killed the 4 submunition boats.
When the SM and beam boats close to kill me, I split right / left the
two ships, move them outside the narrow beam range and kill the SM
boats before they can shoot. Spend next couple turns running down the
remaining beam boat and the other empty boats.
QUESTION: Has ANYBODY EVER WON THIS as the IF? (Hell or even just
killed the BC ... could at least count it as a victory then)
SUGGESTIONS:
- Get rid of the SM boats.
- These boats are suppose to represent iranian gunboats so replace
with:
---4 180* Class 3 Beam 1 DMG *Machine Gun* boats.
---12 Submunition 1 DMG *RPG* Boats
---Give all of the above ships a Class 1 360* Beam also (represent
assorted small calibre machine guns)
- Possible raise the number of IF ships by 2 per side (so 6/18)
